A Lake on the Edge of Two Valleys
Saral Sar sits on the high divide between Kaghan and the Neelum Valley of Azad Kashmir, wrapped in rolling green meadows instead of the bare scree that frames many alpine lakes. That gentler setting, combined with how few people make the journey, gives Saral a calm that the valley’s famous lakes lost years ago.
It is firmly in adventure territory. There are no facilities, no drive-up access and no phone signal — just a jeep track, a trek across open highland, and the lake waiting at the end of it. For travellers who want the north at its most unhurried, that is precisely the draw.
What the Journey Involves
Most groups approach from the Jalkhad side, taking a 4×4 as far as the track allows and then trekking across the meadows to the water. The route can also be walked from the Neelum side. Either way it is a long, remote day, and the sensible way to enjoy it is to camp overnight rather than rush both directions.
Saral only opens for a short summer window, roughly July to September, and weather at this altitude turns fast. We pair it with our longer grand-circuit itineraries and confirm the jeep, guide and camping arrangements — along with current trail conditions — before you set out.
