The Forest Plateau of the Lower Valley
Shogran is the Kaghan Valley’s gentlest paradise: a green plateau at 2,362 metres wrapped in thick pine, fir and spruce forest, floating 600 metres above the Kunhar River near Kiwai. Where Naran and the upper valley deal in raw alpine drama, Shogran deals in comfort — cool forest air, resort hotels with lawns and bonfires, and grandstand views across the valley to Malika Parbat and Musa ka Musalla (4,080 m), the “Prayer Mat of Moses”. The name Shogran means “forest in the sky”, and on misty mornings, when cloud fills the valley below and only the plateau rides above it, the name explains itself.
Because it sits at a lower altitude with a longer season and lies only 34 km from Balakot, Shogran is both the classic first stop of a Kaghan itinerary and the valley’s best-loved weekend escape in its own right — especially for honeymooners and families with young children who want mountain scenery without high-altitude effort.
Things to Do in Shogran
Jeep to Siri Paye — the headline excursion: a 7 km 4×4 track climbs from Shogran to the Siri Paye meadows at 2,895 m, with its small lake, fog-swept grasslands and horse rides (full guide on our Siri Paye page).
Forest walks — shaded trails loop through old-growth pine around the plateau rim; the 40-minute walk to the eastern viewpoint frames Malika Parbat perfectly.
Bonfires and resort evenings — Shogran’s hotels are built for lingering: lawns, barbecue nights and bonfires under unusually starry skies.
Paye sunset — in settled weather, an evening jeep to Siri Paye for sunset over the sea of peaks is the valley’s most romantic hour.
Kiwai Waterfall — on the approach road, the roadside falls at Kiwai make a classic chai-and-pakora stop, with seating platforms right in the spray.
How to Reach Shogran
Shogran is reached by a 7 km paved but steep and winding road that leaves the main N-15 at Kiwai, 24 km past Balakot. From Islamabad the total drive is about 200 km / 4.5–5 hours — an hour closer than Naran, which is why many itineraries overnight here first. Ordinary cars manage the Kiwai–Shogran climb in dry conditions; in rain or early season, drive gently or park at Kiwai and take a local jeep up (Rs. 1,500–2,000). Onward to Siri Paye is 4×4-only: jeeps from Shogran charge Rs. 4,000–5,000 return.
Best Time to Visit
Shogran has the longest season of any Kaghan destination: April to November, and the plateau is increasingly visited even in winter for snow scenery when the access road permits. May–June brings fresh green and clear mountain views; July–August is lush but mistier; September–October delivers crystal air and autumn gold. For Siri Paye above it, June to September is ideal. Shogran is also the valley’s best monsoon-season bet — when Naran clouds over, the plateau often floats above the weather.
