Section by Section

Islamabad → Mansehra (M-15 Hazara Motorway): excellent — dual carriageway, tunnels, motorway service areas. Two hours of the easiest mountain-approach driving in Pakistan.

Mansehra → Balakot (N-15): good paved highway over the Kawai hills, 45–60 minutes; occasional monsoon-season rockfall points, cleared quickly.

Balakot → Kaghan (N-15): paved and scenic along the Kunhar; narrower, with village sections and the Kiwai bottleneck on summer weekends. 1.5–2 hours.

Kaghan → Naran: paved; the most landslide-prone stretch in heavy rain and the first to hold snow. In season it is routinely fine — in early spring and late autumn, check before travelling. 45–60 minutes.

Naran → Batakundi → Jalkhad → Babusar Top: paved throughout but high, steep and exposed; open roughly mid-June to late September. Early-season snowmelt can scar the surface; water crossings appear after storms. Confident driving or a hired local driver recommended.

Jeep tracks (Saif ul Malook, Lalazar, Siri Paye): unpaved 4×4-only by design — local registered jeeps operate them; private cars are barred from the Saif ul Malook track entirely.
