Packing for Naran defeats more travellers than the jeep tracks do — because one trip spans 40°C plains, 12°C valley nights and a freezing mountain pass. The system that works is layers plus a short list of altitude essentials. Here is the exact list we send every guest.
Clothing — The Layer System
Per person: 1 warm insulated jacket (non-negotiable, every month), 1 fleece or hoodie mid-layer, 3–4 breathable shirts, 2 trousers/jeans plus 1 trekking-friendly pair, 1 light rain shell (July–August especially), warm sleepwear, beanie and light gloves for Babusar or May/September trips, and comfortable walking shoes with grip — the lakeshore and meadow paths are stony. Ladies: shalwar kameez with a warm shawl works perfectly valley-wide; add trousers for the jeep and trekking days.
Altitude & Sun Essentials
High-altitude sun burns fast even at 15°C: SPF 50 sunblock, sunglasses (children too) and a cap top the list. Add lip balm, a personal water bottle per person (hydration is the cheapest altitude-sickness prevention), basic medicines — paracetamol, motion-sickness tablets for the switchbacks, ORS sachets, any personal prescriptions — and a small torch or headlamp for hotel-area power cuts.
Money, Documents & Tech
Cash is king above Balakot: withdraw in Balakot or before — Naran’s ATMs run dry on peak weekends. Carry CNIC/passport (checkpoints at Batakundi and Besal log upper-valley traffic), a power bank (day trips outlast phone batteries), car charger, and offline Google Maps downloaded for the valley — signal dies beyond Batakundi.
Family Add-ons
Children: one extra warm layer beyond the adult count, motion-sickness tablets tested beforehand, familiar snacks (mountain dhabas bore small children fast), and any infant formula/diapers in full trip quantity — Naran Bazaar stocks basics at 2× city prices. Elderly travellers: knee support for jeep rides, personal medicines in double quantity split across bags.
The Five Things Everyone Forgets
1) The jacket in the day bag rather than the roof luggage — you need it at the first Kiwai stop. 2) Sunglasses for children. 3) Cash beyond the first day. 4) Power bank. 5) A dry bag or plastic sleeve for phones on rafting and waterfall stops. Pack these and you have out-prepared 90% of the valley. Cross-check against your month with the weather guide, and if Babusar is on your itinerary, read the pass guide for its specific extras.
