Where the Valley Opens Wide
Thirty-four kilometres past Naran, the tight gorge of the upper Kunhar suddenly relaxes into Jalkhad: a broad, grassy flood plain at 3,100 metres where the river slows, braids into silver channels, and wanders across meadows framed by bare, snow-lined ridges. After the drama of the gorge, the openness is startling — and it explains why Jalkhad has become the valley’s camping and picnic headquarters. Summer weekends see family groups spread across the plains, seasonal campsites pitch their rows of tents, and anglers work the slow channels for trout.
Jalkhad is also a junction with ambitions: a rough seasonal track leaves the plains toward Noori Top (5,012 m visible on the skyline) and onward to Sharda in Neelum Valley, Azad Kashmir — an adventurous 4×4 crossing for equipped groups in high summer. For everyone else, Jalkhad is the perfect leg-stretch between Naran and Lulusar/Babusar, and one of the finest places in the valley to simply sit by moving water.
Things to Do at Jalkhad
Riverside picnics — the braided channels create safe, shallow edges and endless private picnic spots on the grass.
Camping — seasonal campsites (July–August) offer tents, bedding and meals from around Rs. 3,000–6,000 per tent per night; independent campers pitch free on the public plains.
Trout fishing — the slow water holds brown and rainbow trout; permits are required (arranged in Naran) and the fishing here is among the valley’s most pleasant.
Photography — the braided river at golden hour, horses grazing the plain, and Noori Top on the southern skyline.
Noori Top excursion — experienced 4×4 parties tackle the seasonal track toward Noori Top and the Sharda crossing; a guide and proper vehicle are essential.
How to Reach Jalkhad
Jalkhad sits directly on the paved N-15, 34 km / about one hour past Naran through Batakundi, and 14 km before Lulusar Lake. Every Babusar-bound vehicle passes through it; group day tours from Naran (from Rs. 6,500) stop here, and a private car for a dedicated Jalkhad half-day costs Rs. 4,000–6,000 from Naran. The road is open with the upper valley, roughly mid-June to late September in full, with early access some years from late May as far as the plains.
Best Time to Visit
Late June to early September is Jalkhad’s season — the plains green up late at this altitude. July–August is camping high season, with daytime temperatures of 15–20°C and nights near 5°C (colder in the wind). Early season the river runs high and cold with snowmelt; by late August the channels are gentlest for families. September empties the plains beautifully but nights turn frosty and campsites begin packing up.

Where to Stay
Camping is the point of Jalkhad — serviced summer campsites handle tents, bedding and food. For hotel walls, sleep 20 minutes down-valley in Batakundi or return to Naran (one hour). Many travellers do exactly that: Jalkhad afternoon, Batakundi night.
Suggested Itinerary
Classic Jalkhad stop: on any Babusar day, save Jalkhad for the return leg — picnic lunch on the plains around 1 PM when you are descending and the day-trip crowds have moved on. Jalkhad Camping Checklist
Pack for 3,100 metres, not for the Naran forecast: a true warm layer plus beanie and socks for sleeping, a sleeping bag even in glamping tents, headlamp per person, power bank charged in Naran, sunblock and sunglasses for the fierce daytime glare, and cash — no card machine has ever worked on these plains. Add motion-sickness tablets for switchback-sensitive passengers on the drive, wet wipes as washroom insurance, and a thermos the dhaba will happily fill with chai for the cold hours. Families should bring a ground mat for the tent floor and one warm change per child; the classic Jalkhad mistake is packing for the sunny 3 PM arrival and meeting the 4 AM cold unprepared.

Campers should book July weekends ahead and pack real warmth; anglers should ask the campsite about current permit arrangements the day before. Either way, pair it with Lulusar 14 km up the road: river plains and grand lake in one unhurried afternoon.
