Why Saif ul Malook Is Pakistan’s Most Famous Lake
Sitting in a glacial bowl at 3,224 metres, Lake Saif ul Malook is the single most photographed spot in the Kaghan Valley — and arguably in all of northern Pakistan. On a still morning the lake turns into a perfect mirror, doubling Malika Parbat (5,290 m), the Queen of the Mountains, in its emerald water. The lake owes its name to the Persian fairy tale of Prince Saif ul Malook, who fell in love with the fairy princess Badri Jamala after seeing her bathing here on a full-moon night. Local storytellers in Naran Bazaar still recite the legend, and boatmen will happily point out the exact rock where the prince is said to have hidden.
The lake was carved by glaciers during the Pleistocene era and is fed year-round by the melting ice of Malika Parbat. Depending on the light, its colour shifts from deep jade at midday to molten gold at sunset. Because it lies only 8–9 km from Naran town, it is the one excursion virtually every visitor to the valley makes — more than 4,000 people can visit on a peak July weekend, which is exactly why timing your visit matters (more on that below).
Things to Do at Saif ul Malook
Boating on the lake — colourful rowing boats operate from the shore for roughly Rs. 800–1,200 per boat. A 20-minute loop gives you the classic view of Malika Parbat rising directly out of the water.
The full-moon night trip — on clear full-moon nights local operators run late-evening jeep trips; the lake under moonlight is the setting of the original fairy tale and an experience few tourists know to ask for. Dress very warmly — temperatures drop near freezing even in July.
Trek to Ansoo Lake — the tear-shaped Ansoo Lake (4,245 m) is reached by a demanding 7–8 hour return trek that starts at Saif ul Malook. It should only be attempted in July–August with a local guide.
Horse riding and short walks — ponies circle the lake for about Rs. 500 per person, and an easy 45-minute walk along the eastern shore takes you away from the crowds to quiet photo spots facing the glacier.
Food at the lake — seasonal dhabas serve pakoras, chai and simple daal-chawal. Prices are 2–3× Naran Bazaar rates because everything comes up by jeep.
How to Reach Saif ul Malook
The lake is connected to Naran Bazaar by a rough 8 km unpaved track that climbs 800 vertical metres. Private cars are not permitted — hiring a registered 4×4 jeep from the Naran jeep stand is mandatory and costs Rs. 3,500–4,500 return, with the driver waiting up to three hours at the lake. The ride takes 30–45 bone-shaking minutes each way and is half the adventure. Fit visitors can also hike the jeep track in about 3 hours going up; many trekkers ride up and walk down in around 2 hours. In early season (May) sections of the track can still be blocked by avalanche snow, and jeeps drop passengers at the snow line for a short walk. Best Time to Visit
The lake is accessible from roughly mid-May to late October. June to August is peak season with the most reliable weather; September offers golden light, thinner crowds and autumn colour. For the mirror reflection that made the lake famous, arrive between 5 AM and 9 AM, before the daily breeze ruffles the surface — our tours schedule the jeep departure at dawn for exactly this reason. In winter the lake freezes solid under two metres of snow and the track closes completely.

Day trip from Naran: depart the jeep stand 5:30 AM → sunrise mirror photos 6:15–7:30 → boat ride and breakfast at the lake → optional shore walk → return to Naran by noon, leaving the afternoon free for the bazaar or Kunhar riverside.
