At 2,624 metres it sits noticeably cooler and dramatically calmer than Naran — no bazaar crush, no horn-blowing jeep stand — just a string of riverside hotels, glacier views, and the Kunhar sliding past your balcony. Travellers who have done Naran’s bustle once often return and sleep here instead, driving the 20 minutes into town only when they need it.
Batakundi’s real superpower is position: it is the launchpad for the upper valley. The Lalazar jeep track starts here; Jalkhad is 20 minutes up the road; Lulusar 40; and starting a Babusar Top morning from Batakundi instead of Naran buys you first-on-the-pass light and an hour’s less driving.

How to Reach Batakundi
Batakundi lies on the paved N-15, 16 km / 25–30 minutes past Naran. Any vehicle that reaches Naran reaches Batakundi. Coming from Islamabad, the total run is roughly 246 km / 5.5–6.5 hours. Note the police checkpoint at the village entrance logging vehicles bound for the upper valley — keep your CNIC handy. Beyond Batakundi the road remains paved to Babusar but grows steeper and more exposed; fuel does not exist past Naran, so arrive topped up.
Best Time to Visit
June to September is the season, matching the upper valley it serves. Early June still shows snow banks near the village; July–August are green and mild (daytime 18–23°C, nights 6–10°C — pack warm); late September brings golden poplars and empty hotels at 30–40% off. From November the village winters under snow and hotels close until spring.

The premium tier offers genuine river-facing glass fronts, central heating and proper restaurants; the mid-tier gives clean rooms where “river view” may mean a side angle — ask specifically for river-facing when booking, and in June or September confirm heating rather than assuming it. Corner rooms at the strip’s upper end catch both the river and the waterfall wall opposite. One practical note: the strip sits right on the highway, so light sleepers should request rear (river-side) rooms, which trade road noise for water noise — the better bargain by far.
