Boating & Kayaking in Naran Kaghan — Kunhar River & Saif ul Malook Guide 2026

June 12, 2026 — by NaranTours.pk

Water activities in Naran Kaghan offer a completely different perspective of this mountain landscape — from the mirror surface of Lake Saif ul Malook at 3,224m to the churning glacial Kunhar River in the valley below. Here’s your complete 2026 guide to boating and kayaking in the Kaghan Valley.

Boating at Lake Saif ul Malook

Lake Saif ul Malook is the premier boating destination in Kaghan Valley. The crystal-clear glacial water — coloured turquoise-green by suspended glacial sediment — is rowed by local operators in traditional wooden flat-bottomed boats. A standard ride covers the lake perimeter and midpoint, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding snow peaks and (in calm conditions) their reflections in the water.

Price: Rs. 800–1,200 per person for a 20–25 minute boat ride. Best time: Early morning (5–9 AM) when the water is calm for reflections and the lake is less crowded. Availability: June through September, operated by local Gujjar boatmen. Safety: All boats have basic life rings. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kayaking on the Kunhar River

The Kunhar River offers kayaking at calmer stretches near Batakundi (20km north of Naran) and at organized points near Naran Bazaar. Single-seat kayaks are available from local adventure operators for Rs. 500–800 for a 30-minute session. The turquoise glacial water in the Batakundi section is particularly scenic, with forested banks and mountain ridges on both sides.

For those who want longer kayaking experiences, some operators offer 2–3 hour guided kayaking sessions on the calmer upper Kunhar stretches for Rs. 2,500–4,000 per person including guide and safety equipment.

White-Water Rafting on the Kunhar

More intense than kayaking, the Class II–III white-water rafting on the main Kunhar stretch in Naran town is the most popular water activity in Kaghan Valley. A 4–5km rafting run costs Rs. 700–1,000 per person and takes 45–60 minutes. All NaranTours packages include the option to add rafting at discounted group rates.

Safety Tips for Water Activities in Naran

The Kunhar River and Saif ul Malook Lake are glacially fed — water temperature is extremely cold year round (5–12°C). Always wear the life jacket provided. Do not attempt to swim in the Kunhar River — currents are deceptively powerful. Children under 8 should not participate in rafting or kayaking. Wear quick-dry clothing rather than cotton.
