Overview

Three of northern Pakistan's most requested regions, in one continuous seven-day loop that most operators would never think to connect: the Galiyat hill station of Nathiagali, the Kaghan Valley's lakes and passes, and Swat's forested, history-rich valley — sequenced so each flows naturally into the next rather than backtracking across the map.

The trip opens gently: Islamabad to Nathiagali is barely a two-and-a-half-hour drive, and the first evening is spent at 2,410 metres among pine and oak forest, with time for Mall Road and, for early risers, an easy walk toward Mushkpuri or Miranjani's viewpoints the following morning. From Nathiagali the route continues through Abbottabad and Mansehra to Naran — a natural geographic progression rather than a detour — where the itinerary delivers the valley's essentials: a dawn Saif ul Malook jeep safari, the full Babusar Top run with Lulusar Lake along the way, and an overnight in Shogran for Siri Paye's meadows. From Shogran, the route turns toward Swat for Mingora's Buddhist-era history, Malam Jabba's ski-resort scenery, and Kalam's cooler forest valley, ending at Mahodand Lake's turquoise water before the long return to Islamabad.

Seven days across three distinct regions sounds ambitious, and it is — but the routing is genuinely efficient rather than exhausting, because each leg progresses geographically instead of criss-crossing the map. This is the tour for travellers who've done Naran before, are curious about Nathiagali's gentler introduction to the mountains, and want Swat's very different character rounding out the week. Private vehicle throughout, hotels chosen in each region rather than the cheapest available option, and a single itinerary covering ground that would otherwise mean three separate trips. Given the genuine distances across three regions, we recommend booking at least two weeks ahead during peak summer months, and we plan each day's driving realistically rather than compressing the schedule to fit an artificially round trip length.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Day 1 Islamabad → Nathiagali

Depart Islamabad at 7:00 AM via the Murree Expressway, climbing into the cool pine-and-oak hills of the Galiyat. We reach Nathiagali (2,410m) by early afternoon and check in, with time for a stroll along the leafy Mall Road. The evening is free amid the forest and mountain air of this old hill station.

2
Day 2 Nathiagali → Naran

There's an optional early walk toward the Mushkpuri viewpoint through the pine forest before breakfast. We then set off via Abbottabad and Mansehra toward Balakot and the Kaghan Valley, the road climbing along the Kunhar River into steadily bigger scenery, reaching Naran by evening for check-in and dinner.

3
Day 3 Naran — Saif ul Malook

A dawn 4×4 jeep safari climbs to Lake Saif-ul-Malook, where the peaks mirror on the still morning water — time for a boat ride and photography at the valley's signature sight. The afternoon is then free in Naran Bazaar for tea, dry fruit and a relaxed wander through the mountain town.

4
Day 4 Babusar Top & Shogran

A full-day excursion heads to Babusar Top (4,173m) via Batakundi and the turquoise Lulusar Lake, season permitting, for snow and sweeping panoramas from the valley's highest pass. In the evening we drive down and across to Shogran, settling into a hotel among the pines ready for the meadows tomorrow.

5
Day 5 Siri Paye → Swat

A morning 4×4 jeep climbs to the Siri Paye meadows for wide views over the pastures and Malka Parbat, then we drive west via Abbottabad into the green Swat Valley. In Mingora we visit Buddhist-era sites from Swat's ancient Gandhara past before overnighting at the valley's lively heart.

6
Day 6 Swat → Malam Jabba → Kalam → Mahodand

The day climbs to the Malam Jabba ski resort, high among forested ridges, then continues up the valley to Kalam (2,100m). A jeep run reaches the beautiful Mahodand Lake (3,050m), set among meadows and snow-streaked peaks, for photography and a lakeside pause, before returning to overnight in Kalam.

7
Day 7 Kalam → Islamabad

After a relaxed start we begin the return drive, joining the Swat Motorway for a smooth run back toward the plains. With comfort stops along the way, we reach Islamabad by evening, closing a week that linked the Galiyat's forests, the Kaghan Valley's lakes and the meadows of Swat.
