Naran is the main tourism base in the upper Kaghan Valley of Mansehra District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Kunhar River runs through the valley from the upper lake system toward its confluence with the Jhelum near Muzaffarabad.
What Makes the Valley Special?
The valley combines accessible lower-valley towns with high seasonal destinations. Major sights include Saif ul Malook, Shogran and Siri Paye, Lulusar Lake, Lalazar and Babusar Top. Ansoo Lake and Dudipatsar are strenuous high-altitude trekking objectives rather than ordinary roadside stops.
Distance and Travel Time
Naran is commonly described as about 230 km from Islamabad by the Hazara Motorway, Mansehra, Balakot and N-15 route. A 5–6 hour estimate is possible in light seasonal traffic, but weekends, road work, weather and stops can add substantial time. Travellers from other cities should obtain a date-specific route and pickup plan rather than treating published drive times as guarantees.
Major Attractions
Saif ul Malook: a high alpine lake reached by a rough seasonal local-jeep track from Naran. Babusar Top: a 4,173-metre seasonal pass on the paved upper-valley road, opening only after official snow clearance. Shogran and Siri Paye: a lower-valley hill station and seasonal meadow route. Lulusar and Lalazar: upper-valley lake and meadow visits whose access depends on current conditions.
Best Time to Visit
Late June through September normally offers the broadest access, but no month guarantees that every road or attraction will be open. Naran town can open before Saif ul Malook and Babusar; rain, landslides, maintenance and early snow can also interrupt summer travel. Confirm official and local road status shortly before departure.
