Overview

Skardu deserves a full trip on its own terms, and pairing it with Naran in exactly seven days is the most efficient way to give it that respect while still opening the itinerary with the Kaghan Valley's own headline sights. This Karakoram Tour is built for travellers chasing the region's biggest scenic payoff — the cold deserts, turquoise lakes, and K2-adjacent grandeur that no amount of description quite prepares you for.

The trip opens in Naran with Saif ul Malook's dawn jeep safari before the long drive north over Babusar Pass onto the Karakoram Highway toward Skardu — a genuinely spectacular multi-day drive in its own right, not simply transit between two destinations. Once in Skardu, the remaining days cover the region's signature sights: the turquoise lakes around Shangrila and Kachura, the strange beauty of the Sarfaranga cold desert, and — where time and conditions allow — viewpoints toward the world's second-highest mountain.

This is a premium private-vehicle tour by necessity; the distances between Naran and Skardu are genuinely large, and doing them justice means comfortable, unhurried travel rather than a budget shared-transport compromise. It suits experienced northern-Pakistan travellers who've already done a standalone Naran trip and are specifically chasing Skardu's more extreme, high-altitude scenery next — this tour gives you both in one continuous, logically sequenced week rather than two separate trips with an expensive flight or long drive between them. Skardu's more remote roads and occasional weather-related closures mean we confirm current conditions before every departure, and we recommend this specific tour only outside the depths of winter, when the full route is reliably passable. Winter travel on this route isn't offered at all, given genuinely hazardous road conditions between November and April on the higher sections beyond Chilas. Late spring through early autumn remains the most dependable window for this entire route end to end.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1
Day 1 Islamabad → Naran

We depart Islamabad at 6:00 AM for the scenic climb up the Kaghan Valley to Naran, reached by afternoon. After hotel check-in the evening is free, with a trout dinner a local favourite, resting ahead of a week that carries you from Kaghan's lakes to Skardu and the Deosai Plains.

2
Day 2 Saif ul Malook & Lalazar

A sunrise jeep to Lake Saif ul Malook opens the day, the peaks mirrored on still water. The afternoon is spent on the Lalazar meadows, a gentle pine plateau above the valley, before returning to Naran — an easy day before the long crossing north over Babusar the next morning.

3
Day 3 Babusar Top → Chilas

We drive over Babusar Top (4,173m), the valley's highest pass, for snow and sweeping views, then descend onto the Karakoram Highway toward Chilas. Following the Indus through dramatic gorges, we reach Chilas for the night, poised between the Kaghan Valley and the road east to Baltistan.

4
Day 4 Chilas → Gilgit → Skardu

The Karakoram Highway runs north to Gilgit, where we turn east onto the Skardu Road, tracing the Indus through a spectacular gorge into Baltistan. Arriving in Skardu, we visit the famous Shangrila Resort with its heart-shaped Lower Kachura Lake, settling in beneath the region's soaring peaks.

5
Day 5 Skardu City & Shigar

A day around Skardu takes in the tranquil Upper Kachura Lake, the hilltop Skardu (Kharpocho) Fort over the town, and the beautifully restored 400-year-old Shigar Fort palace, set among apricot orchards. It's an unhurried immersion in Baltistan's history, water and mountain scenery.

6
Day 6 Deosai Plains (4,115m)

We climb onto the vast Deosai Plains (4,115m), the world's second-highest plateau, a rolling expanse of wildflowers and streams that is home to Himalayan brown bears. We pause at the serene Sheosar Lake amid the plains before descending, having crossed one of the north's most extraordinary landscapes.

7
Day 7 Skardu → Islamabad

The trip winds up in Skardu, from where you can fly back to Islamabad (own cost) for a spectacular flight over the Karakoram, or take the long scenic drive down the Karakoram Highway. Either way you arrive back in the capital by evening after a week deep in the north.
