Naran Kaghan offers some of Pakistan’s most distinctive regional food — dishes shaped by the Hazara mountain culture, the Kunhar River’s fresh fish and the alpine climate that produces some of the country’s finest honey and dairy.

Fresh Trout Fish — The Signature Dish

Fresh Trout (Rainbow & Brown) is the dish that defines Naran Kaghan. Rainbow trout and brown trout caught from the Kunhar River and its tributaries are prepared in various styles at Naran Bazaar restaurants: whole roasted with local spices, fried, or cooked in a light tomato-based karahi. Price: Rs. 1,200–2,000 per full fish depending on size and restaurant. The fish is always fresh — caught same-day from the river. This is widely regarded as the best trout in Pakistan.

Kaghan Shahad — Mountain Honey

Kaghan Shahad (mountain honey) is one of Pakistan’s most prized honeys, produced by bees foraging on alpine wildflowers at 2,000–3,500m. The honey is distinctively fragrant, lighter in colour than plain-honey and significantly more complex in flavour. Price in Naran Bazaar: Rs. 2,000–5,000 per kilogram (genuine mountain honey). Always buy from reputable Naran Bazaar shops — adulteration with sugar syrup is common in lower-quality products.

Desi Murgh (Free-Range Chicken)

Kaghan Valley’s free-range mountain chickens produce a distinctively flavoured meat that is firmer and richer than commercially raised chicken. Desi Murgh curry at Naran restaurants costs Rs. 800–1,500 per portion and is typically served with tandoor naan or makkai roti. A local favourite, particularly for lunch at Naran Bazaar.

Saag with Makkai Roti

The classic Hazara highland comfort food — mustard greens (saag) slow-cooked with butter and spices, served with thick cornbread (makkai roti) and a dollop of white butter. Rs. 300–500 per portion. Warming, filling and perfectly suited to the cool mountain climate. Available at most local restaurants in Naran Bazaar.

Dry Fruits & Local Products

Naran Bazaar has numerous shops selling locally sourced dry fruits, walnuts (Kaghan walnuts are famous), pine nuts (chilgoza), dried apricots and dried mulberries. Prices are competitive compared to city markets. Also look for local jams, preserved fruits and hand-crafted wooden items.
