Packing for Naran Kaghan is different from packing for a beach holiday or a city trip. The mountain environment at 2,400–4,200m requires specific preparation that many first-time visitors underestimate, particularly in the warmth layers department. Here’s our definitive 2026 packing guide based on 8 years of operating tours in the Kaghan Valley.
Essential — Do Not Leave Without These
1. Warm fleece jacket: Non-negotiable even in July. Temperatures at Saif ul Malook (3,224m) can be 15°C colder than Islamabad on the same day. At Babusar Top (4,173m), it can be near 0°C in peak summer. A mid-weight fleece (250g) is ideal. 2. Windproof outer shell: Mountain winds cut through fleece. A lightweight waterproof/windproof jacket adds essential protection. 3. Comfortable walking shoes: You don’t need heavy mountain boots for casual Naran tourism. Comfortable trainers or light hiking shoes are fine for Naran Bazaar, the Saif ul Malook jeep track walk and Shogran meadows. 4. Sunscreen (SPF 50+): UV radiation is dramatically more intense at altitude. Many visitors are surprised to get significant sunburn despite cool temperatures. Apply every 2 hours. 5. Sunglasses: Essential — especially if there’s snow at Babusar Top. Snow blindness is a real risk without UV-protective eyewear. 6. Personal medications: Bring sufficient supply. Pharmacies in Naran are limited. If you take regular medications, bring 30% extra. Altitude headaches are common — bring paracetamol (Panadol). 7. Cash (Pakistani rupees): ATMs in Naran are unreliable and often empty in peak season. Bring sufficient cash from Islamabad or Lahore. 8. Power bank (large capacity — 20,000mAh): Load-shedding is common in Naran. A large power bank ensures your phone stays charged for photography, offline maps and emergency communication.
Highly Recommended — Significant Quality of Life Improvement
Thermal underlayer (base layer), lightweight trekking socks (3 pairs), reusable water bottle (minimum 1.5L), headlamp (for early morning Saif ul Malook jeep), rain poncho (lightweight), hand sanitizer, lip balm (high altitude dries lips rapidly), microfiber towel, snacks (energy bars, nuts), offline map (Google Maps or Maps.me downloaded before leaving Islamabad).
What to Leave at Home
Heavy luggage/large suitcases (backpacks or duffel bags are much better in mountain vehicles), excessive formal clothing (Naran is casual — jeans, fleece, trekking pants are the standard), hair dryers (power is unreliable), expensive jewelry (unnecessary and a security risk), high heels or formal shoes.
